First photos from new-to-me K-30; id10t user meets beautiful bear
Posted By: luftfluss, 08-16-2015, 10:13 PM

On Saturday my "new" K-30 was delivered. I set the battery to charging while I took my MIL to the opthalmologist. By the time I got home it was early evening & cloudy. I saw a bear crossing the back yard, so I grabbed the K-30 + Tak 300/4 and followed him into the brush. He was the most beautiful bear I've ever seen, not fully grown (maybe 3 years old), shiny black luxurious fur, really cute - I so much wanted to hug him. But I kept a good 15-20 yards distance. Focusing was a bit of a challenge (need to practice more) in the dim light, ISO 1600 1/350s f/4 left me 2/3 EV underexposed. But - and here I am a total idiot - I neglected to adjust the OVF's diopter. Most of my shots came out front-focused. I did manage a few decent ones, though.

I really like the K-30. Same imaging pipeline as the K-01, so they make wonderful co-conspirators.

Which lens and body were you using when you took the back-focused shots? You might need to perform an AF adjustment, if your camera body supports it.
The lens was a smc DA 35mm AL (plastic fantastic) on a K-30. I did do some AF adjustment but haven't had a real world opportunity to test it yet.

nice shots
The fact that I can still count to 10 on my fingers tells me I didn't.

Think you nailed the focus. Those bear's eyes are very sharp. Excellent pix.

Where were the pix taken ? The USA or Canada ?
Taken right here in New Joisey, USA. We have several thousand bears in the state.

I haven't used my 35/2.4 yet on my K-30, but it's terrific on my K-01. Hopefully all it needs is a little AF adjustment. If it still doesn't produce satisfactory images, I recommend making a forum post about it - it's a very popular lens!

That's an insult to the bear.

That still doesn't sound very much to me, as I know these bad boys can sprint if required.

I'm protected by my Pentax. Bears prefer Nikon.

Good one.

He needs to also get the photographers step ladder kit for Christmas, if he's to see through the viewfinder.

Good one, is this just after he's eaten the photographer, hence to relaxed full stomach stance?

Great shots, I used to have a black bear resident when I was in college. That was in the upper peninsula of Michigan. That second one is ckassic. I have the K50 and the K-01, I really enjoy them both.

Wow - these look outstanding to me. Great subject, great compositions and and great exposure - can't beat that combo.

Thanks, Jer. 7 of about 30 shots wound up being keepers.
