First photos from new-to-me K-30; id10t user meets beautiful bear
Lens: smc Takumar 300/4 Camera: K-30 ISO: 1600
Posted By: luftfluss, 08-16-2015, 10:13 PM

On Saturday my "new" K-30 was delivered. I set the battery to charging while I took my MIL to the opthalmologist. By the time I got home it was early evening & cloudy. I saw a bear crossing the back yard, so I grabbed the K-30 + Tak 300/4 and followed him into the brush. He was the most beautiful bear I've ever seen, not fully grown (maybe 3 years old), shiny black luxurious fur, really cute - I so much wanted to hug him. But I kept a good 15-20 yards distance. Focusing was a bit of a challenge (need to practice more) in the dim light, ISO 1600 1/350s f/4 left me 2/3 EV underexposed. But - and here I am a total idiot - I neglected to adjust the OVF's diopter. Most of my shots came out front-focused. I did manage a few decent ones, though.

I really like the K-30. Same imaging pipeline as the K-01, so they make wonderful co-conspirators.

Whoa! Both beautiful shots of such a healthy Bruin. #2 is great classic shot with the leaf and expression. Keeper.

Are you saying the diopter adjustment resulted in front-focus? Were you focusing manually?

I'm wondering because I took a whole series of photos and all where back-focused. I rely on auto focus because my vision is bad. Now I'm thinking it's the diopter that fooled me to take the out of focus shot.

Thanks, fellas! The Tak is a wonderful lens, and I, too, love the shot with the leaf on his nose.

Yes, I focus manually and because I did not adjust the diopter I did not focus correctly.

Which lens and body were you using when you took the back-focused shots? You might need to perform an AF adjustment, if your camera body supports it.

This is great! Focus and DOF look fine to me, I wouldn't have noticed any issue if you hadn't said anything... and I still don't!

Think you nailed the focus. Those bear's eyes are very sharp. Excellent pix.

Where were the pix taken ? The USA or Canada ?
