Two cranes
Lens: Sigma 50-500 OS HSM Camera: K3 Photo Location: Middleville, Michigan ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F10

I was walking along a section of the North Country Scenic Trail and came up on these two. They were pretty far way even at 500mm. Luckily I had my monopod with me. I do not see Sandhill Cranes very often. Sandhill Cranes are considered to be one of the oldest living bird species. Due to the orange plumage these two are immature cranes.

Wow, I'd love to be able to get bird shots like that. I never seem to see many, especially trophy catches like these!

The bare, red skin on the forehead indicates that they are adults. The adult plumage becomes stained adventitiously to a rust colour over the course of the year between the annual moults, so that by summer they are quite rusty-coloured.

I was always told the adults are more grey in color, but I am not expert. I usually do not get to see them up this close.
