High Desert Scenery
Camera: Pentax K-5
Posted By: GeoJerry, 10-08-2015, 12:38 AM

A few more shots of California's high desert country, taken around Mono Lake and a little further south in the Owens Valley.

An interesting contrast between the red brush and the yellowish tumbleweeds.

Another from Conway Summit. I'm seriously thinking about going back up here the weekend after next.

Approaching Mono Lake from the southeast on highway 120.

Trying a bird shot in Mono Lake. It's a little out of focus (300 mm handheld) but I like it anyway!

A little further south, on US 395 near the town of Lone Pine.

Very good contrasts in light and shadow which highlights the colour changes. Well picked up.

Looks good Jerry.
Shame about focus on the bird: the water is terrific.

That first image is a proper landscape, wild, rugged and vast.

And if that wasn't enough you've got skies too.

Very nice. I think #1 is fantastic. What lens did you use?

Very good series Jerry. Hard to pick a favourite, but I like the 2nd shot best.

Man, these are nice - compositions and PP are simply first rate. The first one is particularly compelling to eye: the contrast between the earthy colors the ground and the gray sky . . . . sublime.

Thanks again Rod! I am kicking myself about that bird shot. I should have lugged my tripod to this spot, which was only about 1/2 mile at most from the car park, but I got lazy. Next time!

Thanks Kerrowdown, that means a lot coming from a highlander

i like how you minimized the sky on those first two shots, people frame that wrong a lot.

i see it with grand canyon pics regularly... they ignore the detail in the canyon, in favor of mediocre sky.

you have some dramatic clouds, but you showed just enough to get the message across, no need to overdo it.

nice processing as well.

Thanks takis63. That shot was taken with a Sigma 8-16 mm, in this case the focal length was 16 mm.

Thanks volley, I like that one too but I wish I had waited 2 weeks to take it!

Thanks very much osv. I really wanted to emphasize the color of the vegetation on these two shots but you're right, I did want to reveal enough sky to show how interesting it was as well.

Simply amazing - such range of color and texture - especially in #1!

A delightful and playful piece of landscape photography my friend. Are those typical fall colors in the first one?

Beautiful set, Jerry. I guess I'm gonna have take a road trip south. The whole area around Mono is gorgeous this time of year. Are you planning a trip up to Bodie, too? BTW, the tufas at Mono create some eye-popping night landscapes. And most of the tourists have abandoned Yosemite. Just sayin'...

Thanks mole! That scene in #1 surprised me, I just saw rounding a bend and had no idea this kind of vegetation existed in the area.

Thanks so much Fries! I don't know if this was fall colors or just the normal color for this plant. From a distance, you can see exactly where it is, and it doesn't cover very much area, maybe a few square kilometers or so.

Thanks gifthorse! If you're going to go, go soon! I think fall colors will be peaking in a week or two. We've been to Bodie twice recently so I think I'll wait a little more before going back there. I want to do just what you suggest, get night (and sunset) shots of the tufa. Too much cloud cover this time out. I did run up to Tuolumne Meadows, since it's only about 25 miles from Lee Vining, and took a few shots at Olmsted Point, Tenaya Lake, and the meadows area. Great this time of year, almost no tourists at all!
