A telephoto isn't ideal for this kind of photo, plus I had to focus manually, so this isn't as sharp as it should be. I was amazed that he sat there long enough for me to set up the tripod and get several shots.

Either that's how they drink or she's laying the foundation for next years dragons. Probably the latter.

When dipping (laying eggs) they tend to be airborne and wings moving in hoover mode in case of a fast exit.

So I'm not sure whats going on here apart from posing for "Pentax Mode", as she has heard our AF isn't the fastest.

She'e likely laying eggs. I'm sure some will perch and some will fly. It may be as simple as having a safe place to land, like a floating stick.

Dragonflies are a great subject. That red one looks like a meadowhawk of some sort, they're so colorful.
