Otherwise, is this another blae-and-gold split-tone, or is your "A-series" just bringing that spectrum in out of habit?

Fraid so...

Just like the end result so much more than the standard B&W.

Much the same here--I've not tried processing monochrome directly in CS5 (relying instead on ACR, which I think is the same under the hood as Lightroom) but I'm digging the look.

Aye think your right, I've got some nifty wee presets that cover most of my B&W "looks" now.
