Square is just another word for nothing left to lose
Lens: K28/3.5; K135/2.5 Camera: K5 Photo Location: Hastie Natural Area, Knoxville TN ISO: 80
Posted By: CreationBear, 10-29-2015, 01:07 PM

Wandering around the Hunnert-Acre Wood this morning in pretty good light (but a little more wind than suits...) Only a few compositions caught my eye:

so I spent the rest of the morning experimenting with what a solid tele like the K135/2.5 "sees" in a typical understory-rich environment here in the Upper South... As you might expect, there's a lot of faffing-about in the frame as it piles layers of undergrowth, but like Steven's famous jar, a square crop sometimes brings a sense of order to Tennessee.

Nice photos. I'm liking the square crop more myself. Great colors, and that must be a Dogwood in the first one, right? Those are the colors for one. I like the dark and light in the last one, too. We just had a summer day up here. Back to fall tomorrow for a few days. I don't know where the Hastie area is, I'll have to look it up. East Tennessee woods are hard to beat.

Thanks! There's a gent I follow on Flickr that really just hammers that format on these sorts of pictures (not coincidently because he's a real photographer.) https://www.flickr.com/photos/noahbw

At any rate, the Hastie is the southernmost of three natural areas here in South Knoxville--word on the street is that Victor Ashe, the former mayor, acquired the sites strategically to block the extension of James White Parkway that DOT in Nashville was pushing. I have no way of knowing if that's true, of course, but the middle 'un is named for him, so draw your own conclusions.

Otherwise, it ought to be great weather to get out with your K20/4--I definitely want to see how it's treating you.

You are doing just fine. Nice photos in the reference, as well.

I just got a 28/3.5, on your rec. I do want to hit my favorite local coastal park, but I've been a bit shy after a summer Lyme event that likely originated there. I'm missing it.

Pied beauty! The black framing is a nice touch.

Ha, thanks! Young Margaret would be a bit more solipsistic than usual down in my neck of the woods.

Yikes, I think I would stay on the porch until after frost, too--I hope a full recovery is in the offing. Otherwise, I think you're going to love that lens, but from what I've seen, the f/2 "Hollywood" might have you doing the Winslow Homer thing...the blues are just spectacular.
