Pelicans in Breeding Plumage
Posted By: LaRee, 02-08-2007, 04:08 PM

It was very foggy and I did some post processing to try and clear these images up. I hope they don't look too wonky!

I post over at dpreview also, and I will try not to duplicate the images that I post there. That way you won't be looking at the same images both places. If you would like to see the other images from this walk-about you can click here:

Great shots La Ree! I especially enjoy the second, what a posture of that pelican with his (her?) head upside down! Were these taken at the zoo? Or in the wild?

These were taken at LaJolla Shores here in San Diego. They are wild pelicans that come this way during this time of year to breed. They do have some striking colors when they have their breeding plumage on. I'm off right now to head down to the ocean to see what sunset will bring this evening. Maybe I'll run across some more pelicans. :-) Thanks for looking and commenting. R.Miller and SaltWater (been a long time since chemistry class) Oh, it just occurred to me you must be saltwater texas! Cool!

Not wonky at all

Great pictures. I've never seen pelicans with this color scheme - you cats in CA are just plain cool. Here in coastal Texas the pelicans are big and brown!

Hey Jer, these are brown pelicans but they are in breeding plumage right now. They turn a silver gray with bright colorful markings and black as you can see. Around here between the months of December and August they are in varying shades of breeding color. Between August and December they are brown mostly. Thanks for stopping in and commenting!

I don't think I've ever seen Brown Pelicans in breeding plumage before. Very interesting.

Very well shot also, LaRee.
