Red Rock Canyon

Some scenery from Red Rock Canyon State Park, a very small and little known area between the towns of Mojave and Olancha, on US 395 in California. This is the road that runs north-south along the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada and west of the White-Inyo Range, both of which have peaks higher than 14,000 feet within 10 miles of the highway.

Wow, in that first image it looks like the oozing jam layer on a Victoria Sponge.

The first one makes the most visceral impression, but it's the second I'd have hanging on my wall.

Nice shot, especially the colours. Tones were a lot harsher when I was there. Is it my monitor or is there some softness to the first shot?

Thanks bdery. Late afternoon has a way of warming up the colors!
Yes, you're right, it's probably a little too soft. This was taken at ISO 800 and so I pushed the luminance slider up to dampen the noise - probably too far up.

At ISO 800 on a K-5, noise at ISO 800 shouldn't be a problem?

It's not really a big problem, but at ISO 800 images won't be free of noise. You'll probably have to zoom into 1:1 to see it, which is what I did.
