Originally posted by Habakkuk Thanks for your interest, bygp. You're right, they're not the correct colours, although it is a display put up by the city parks department, and their small budget probably meant they had to use whatever leftover paint thay could find!
The colours should have been more like the picture below (on a later Mk 9 Spitfire)...
Most 'roundels' on Spitfires in WW2 had an outer yellow circle around the blue one. Incidentally, some French pilots flew Spitfires in WW2. The first was Maurice Choron, who joined the RAF in August 1940, shot down a Heinkel in November, but he disappeared on April 10, 1942 over Northern France, during the first mission flown by No 341 (Free French) Squadron “Ile de France”. He was credited with three confirmed and three probable victories.
Today's football - England v France at Wembley, London. Long live our friendship in these troubled times.
Although I'm not at all a football fan (but rugby yes, and we have a great club in Toulon, RCT), thanks for all these WW2 history details, and yes we need more than ever to be allies with what is growing in the middle-east, mainly from KSA and has propagated these last years in all Africa and Europe, this is a new type of war we never faced before, underground ennemies who's dream and goal is to have the whole earth becoming muslims and delete all other religions or cultures. They are fools like were the nazis.
P.S. I love the spitfire design, beautifull plane, remember I crafted a "Heller" model of it when teenager amongst many other planes and ships and was taking macro pics of them with the old Minolta SLR I owned.
