C-17 Fly Away - DA*300mm + 1.4X HD TC
Lens: DA*300mm + 1.4X HD TC Camera: K-3II Photo Location: Long Beach, CA ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/1250s Aperture: F8

Here are some photos I took of the final C-17 fly away this past weekend.
This is a sad occasion for me because I was a landing gear engineer for this plane. Long Beach had a booming airplane manufacturing industry, and this was the very last plane built here
Anyway, it was shot with a DA*300mm + 1.4X HD TC. Almost all of this shots are at infinity, so you do get some bad atmospheric effects (haziness), but overall, I LOVE this combo.

Great photos! I especially love the last one, suitable for framing!

Great shots. I particularly like the contextual shots with the Hollywood sign and LA skyscrapers behind them.

Good thing we got our 8 C-17's before the production shut down. Nice looking, very capable planes.

Very impressive. I worked briefly for a third-party that supplied various small parts for the C-17.

Really enjoyable images, beautifully caught ... Takes me back to when I used to love messing around with computer Flight Sims. You clearly picked the vantage point well and the techniques are great. I would suggest you try and pull down the magenta colour channel saturation which might restore some greener and yellow tones on the hills and foliages ..I think the atmospheric haze plus the optical combinations may have added the cast I see.

Thank you, and I will give your suggestion a try

I used my tripod w/ball head to try and be as stable as possible, along with using a fast shutter speed.

Nice shots!

I worked in Palmdale and at Edwards in the early 90's and got to see the C-17 quite a bit. I think it was in flight test then?

I actually got to see a lot of great aircraft when I worked in CA. When I was in Palmdale, they were re-furbishing the B-1 bombers, and one took off and I couldn't help but watch. Full afterburner take-off. It circled and came back through at high speed, low, wings back and on the burners, arcing turn over the parking lot and down the runway. It must of set off about 50 car alarms. It was great!

Anyway, thanks for posting!
