Img1 @ 500mm, Img2 w/2x converter (1000mm), last two images are sample of where I was standing (35mm-70mm).

A reasonably sharp images for that lens.

Try producing same images from the same point with eg a DA 55-300mm. The DA's images will be much less resized, or even upscaled, but I am willing to bet they will be as good or even better. These 500mm lenses are pretty mediocre actually, I have looked at several of them.
