Excellent picture, captures man and dog about to do their job.

Years ago, my wife and I toured Culzean Castle in if I recall correctly, Ayrshire, Scotland. Beautiful castle and a castle that has some General Eisenhower connections.

Aside from the architectural grandeur and history of this magnificent castle, there was also a sheep herding contest,on the grounds, which we took in. It was wonderful to see the amazing communication and coordinated work between Scottish shepherds and Border Collies...as they rounded up herds of sheep in very brief time spans.

Both sheepherder and Border Collies seem to have faster and better communication than even Bluetooth could provide.

Aye, there's nothing quite like a good dog handling sheep.
My uncle had mainly kelpies (Aussie breed which are now exported all over the world) but he also had a border collie: It was great to see them working a mob of sheep.

Your not wrong, it's even more stunning when you see them running in the "Brace Classes" i.e. two dogs simultaneously.

This was taken at this years Scottish National Sheep Dog Trials, where best are put through their paces.

They usually make look oh so easy... except in case when it came to the "Shedding Ring", it looks like someone tossed in a hand grenade as sheep dispersed in all directions.

What's the big stick for?
In Oz, the handler uses whistles (as in, how do you explain it?: with the mouth only, no accessory bought-in-a-shop-whistle).
My uncle could have entered his dogs in trials because he used a mixture of voice commands and whistles.
Back to the big stick: if I was a sheep dog, I would do my darnedest to get it right, knowing that there was a big stick in the hands of the food provider!

The "big stick" as you so call it... is known as a shepherd’s crook and has a C-curve at the top usually made from horn, it's certainly not for use on expensive valuable dogs, which can cost up to £10,000 each for a top dog.

It can be used as a walking stick though it performs a more useful function of helping the shepherd navigate uneven terrain while taking care of the sheep. Besides this, the curved horn of the crook enables the shepherd to catch a sheep that is straying from the herd and also to direct the herd to a particular path. The shepherd may just hang the crook over his arm while walking on normal terrain.
