Big Bird
Lens: DA 55-300 @ 300 Camera: K-3 Photo Location: Lake Jackson, TX ISO: 560 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F8

Well . . . . . not the Big Bird. Rather, this is a character enthroned on our elm tree, which I spotted early yesterday morning when I walked out to get the papers. Kind of an ugly brute - I've no idea what it is but it's a big sucker. The lack of crispness in these photos is due to the fact that the lens was fully extended and not at its best; the softness has absolutely nothing to do with any shakiness in the old geezer photographer (my story, and I'm stickin' to it).

Yep, turkey vulture. Make sure Otis doesn't try to play dead; they love carrion.

Hey Susan - I don't think Otis will come this way. Ya gotta remember Dallas and coastal Texas are different cultures. Our squirrels, like the humans with which they coexist, are more laid back, more Jimmy Buffet than . . . . . say . . . . . Porter Wagoner. Down here it ain't corn in a cup it's gin in a cup. No smart turkey vulture would bite into one of our squirrels for fear of contracting alcohol poisoning.

This one is young, yet - his head will get a bit more red as he attains full maturity. They rest with wings spread not only to soak in the warmth of the sun, but also the sun kills off bacteria collected during feeding.

They're really neat birds and, for the most part, beneficial.

Thanks for the info. As I've said before on the forum, I'm ornithologically challenged and thus appreciate you comments. Thanks for looking.

Well, you may think those photos are "soft"; but I think you really made that 55-300 sing! Great shots, thanks for sharing them here!

Thanks for those very kind words.

I think the DA 55-300 offers a lot of bang for the buck, and it's not too heavy to tote around - important for a creaky old geezer like me.
