Did you know that the Renaissance would not have happened without the invention of chimneys?

Before the invention of chimneys double storied buildings barely existed. Buildings were square, rectangular, and round in plan. A central fire pit provided warmth and light, with smoke making its imperfect escape through a hole in the (typically) thatched roof above.

The variety of buildings in early settlements such as shown at the reconstructions at West Stow in Suffolk (450 CE-750) indicate that related families lived in smaller houses and socialized together in a larger hall.

In winter, people lived and worked in smoke-filled rooms, with a fire that constantly had to be stoked. There was constant danger of a spark lighting the thatch especially because of timber constructions and straw bale roofs.

The discovery of how flues worked led to the invention of the chimney and that in turn led to the fine-tuning and construction of fireplaces. Fireplaces gave off light and warmth - thus the long winter night time could be used to do useful work rather than just cook and sleep. The Renaissance is a direct result of this surplus time.
