When I retired in February of 2009, we bought bicycles to add to our palette of senior activities. On a ride a few days ago, I crossed the 19,000 mile mark on what is now a very-well-used Trek; my wife, who likes to ride more slowly than I do, has accumulated more.

I celebrated with - as some of you who "know" me might guess - a Bud Light.

Always need to keep the carb levels up for those long rides.

Good show.

I'm very impressed. That's a lot of miles to peddle.

I retired in 2008 and just recently have started peddling for exercise and to keep myself in shape. My bicycle is a recumbent, stationary bicycle, a Schwinn.

I prefer the stationary to a traditional bicycle for two reasons. One, our climate has about 5 1/2 months of cold, snow and ice and two, I have metal book stand that allows me to read while cycling. Something I couldn't and wouldn't do on a traditional bicycle.

However I am considering getting another traditional bicycle for the summer months. In the past decade many bicycle paths have been built around my area and it would be nice to take advantage . But in this case, no readin' just ridin'.

Thanks, Les.

We used a stationary bike when we lived in Michigan, but down here, bikes can be used 12 months a year.

I've thought occasionally about joining a fitness place with all the exercise machines they have, but I can't stand the music they play!
