Last Stop for Mad Dog
Lens: DA*16-50/2.8 Camera: Pentax K-3 Photo Location: Coober Pedy ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F7.1

Given the circumstances (whatever they were) this roadside memorial was probably as good a place as any to store one's mortal remains. Clearly, Mad Dog's mates had no time for the official places of interment (maybe, like Gram Parsons, he had a wish for a particular disposal mechanism) or nobody would accept him elsewhere (the nickname might be a clue).

I only noticed this when on the road North, out from Coober Pedy, in South Australia, the opal mining capital of the world. You can see some of the diggings in the background, and there are warning signs everywhere not to stray into the old workings, because of the hidden shafts. Maybe this was one of them, and Mad Dog stumbled into it after a good session, one night, so they just covered him over. Someone from South Oz must know the story...

This, I imagine, is Mad Dog's last fill-in job...

I had an entirely different mental image when I read the title.

Mad Dog was (and perhaps still is) a name applied to Mogan David 20-20, a pseudo wine much beloved by poor grad students owing to its cheap price. I suspect it could produce results similar to those in your photo if one isn't careful!

OK we could at least make up a story. After a bottle of mad dog, Mad Dog decided to explore the mines and encounters a large mad dog none too happy to have his territory invaded. In the end in his inebriated state, Mad Dog loses to the mad dog. A group of kind individuals finds Mad Dog's remains and gives him a proper burial by the road side not knowing where else to take him.

OK there is a reason that I don't write stories for a living...

Could be he was just a fan of wide-open spaces, even in death.

Well, he's certainly got that, in spades!
