It's a fine head shot. I think today we'd expect sharper eyes unless this is a candid shot and you just had to shoot at or near wide open.

I too would have liked sharper eyes on this bonnie lassie, did you have other shots of her?

My vote is still for the first one. Given a choice these attributes in the first one beat having sharpness and that pose in the second. It's warmer both in tone and invitation. Her neck trace from that over the shoulder pose really adds elegance with a good foundation. I still shoot square often with my Hasselblad 500C/M and appreciate a good square comp.

Now this is what I am talking about. A very beautiful young woman with a full face portrait, with no shadows hiding half of her beauty. I really like this a great deal, especially with the softness which truly adds to her loveliness. The only suggestion would be this: A little bit more of a smile would definitely enhance the portrait. However, that is only my personal opinion. Thank you so much for a wonderful viewing experience. Three minutes of looking at her, and I am already lost in her eyes.

Outstanding work.

I have one method for getting as much out of focus as in your first shot in terms of the nose and ears but having the focus rapidly converge on the eyes to a pretty sharp level. But only the hardy venture this direction these days. A Pentax 6x7, its 105/2.4 lens shot at f2.8 and a #1 extension tube. The larger format really gives you some shallow DOF with that lens.

Love those, she is so lovely and you did a great job of capturing her beauty.

Otis even loved the shots enough to give you his coveted award....

He also mentioned that he would like to see more of her.... a lot more! I told him she wasn't that kind of girl and slapped him around a little for the insult!

Great shooting!

Regards!

Super nice portrait.

I don't mind the softness. Having things tack sharp is way overrated, imo, especially in portraiture. I guess I'd contrast that with what I typically would call "headshots" where people really do want sharpness. But those are like the human version of product shots in my mind.

Aye your right, but it does depend on who is paying the bills.

Oh for sure. There's a place for both. And some headshots, like some product shots, can be super cool! (I kinda suck at them and I'm not really interested in shooting them myself. Probably a relationship between those two things.)

But you know me, a lovely portrait of a lady -- gets me every time.
