Snow Birds

Snowy days are great for watching our common songbirds - they are so busy with the business of survival, that it's easier to sneak up on them! Here's a blue jay checking out the leftovers under a bird feeder…

Mr. cardinal sure does stand out in the snow!

Here's a tufted titmouse waiting for his turn at the bird feeder.

White throated sparrow says, "I'm not fat, I'm fluffy!" (All fluffed out against the cold).

Perhaps the sparrow was waiting for his turn at the berry bushes. Privet is an invasive exotic species here in East Tennessee, and you can see how well the birds carry its seeds to new locations!

Speaking of berries, one of our native vines is an excellent source of winter food for birds, and for small mammals. Poison Ivy berries are high in calories and fat, perfect for winter survival. Here's a flicker snacking on the berries.

And a sapsucker feasting nearby in the Poison Ivy thicket. (Definitely NOT good food for humans!)

Hope you enjoyed these few glimpses of winter "bird country," and thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions!

Never thought about birds eating the berries of poison ivy. Interesting. You hit the sharpness button on these birds for sure.

That's one reason why poison ivy is so common - birds who eat the berries also disperse the seeds in their droppings! Have seen over a dozen different species of birds feasting on poison ivy berries at one time!
