Valley of Fire State Park, NV

These photos were taken at Valley of Fire State Park, an hour or so drive outside of Las Vegas, NV. The red sandstone is Jurassic sand dunes, the sand grains now cemented together with iron oxide. The gray rock is Paleozoic limestone. The limestone is hundreds of millions of years older than the sandstone, but lies on top of it, thanks to a geologic event in the late Cretaceous which compressed the western part of North America and thrust the older limestone up on top of the younger sandstone. The same is true for Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, also just outside of Las Vegas.

Nice view of the limestone not far outside the park. 40mm Limited, f/11, 1/200, ISO 100.

Limestone and sandstone near the Beehives. 31mm Limited, f/11, 1/50, ISO 100. Notice the very different weathering patterns for the hard limestone and soft sandstone.

Sandstone formations near the visitor center. The bedding you see in the sandstone is the cumulative effect of sand grains being blown up and over the dunes; the layers are so thick because the dunes were so large. Geologists can use the bedding in sandstone to figure out the strength and direction of the wind at the time the dunes were being deposited. 31mm Limited, f/22, 1/40, ISO 100.

More sandstone formations near the visitor center. 31mm Limited, f/11, 1/250, ISO 100.

Mouse's Tank, a depression which collects and retains rainwater even in the desert. Judging from all of the pictograms nearby, it was a popular spot for Native Americans who lived in the area. 15mm Limited, f/11, 1/50, ISO 400.
