Birds in my tree
Lens: Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 Camera: Pentax K-3 Photo Location: Inner South, Canberra
Posted By: johnhilvert, 02-19-2016, 04:32 AM

As Autumn comes to Canberra, local birdlife (Gang gangs, White Cockatoos and King Parrots) feast on the juicy seeds of my tree.

The Sigma 70-300mm lens matched my K-3 capturing both the colors and their expressions.

Nice group. In general, the most intelligent* of birds, but if ever you'd seen an analysis of the lever mechanism that operates their beaks, you'd never let one feed from your fingers. It is not a simple hinge such as our jaws. It's more like the compound system of a bolt-cutter.

*There's no uniform definition of what constitutes "intelligence" in an animal, much less an agreed-upon procedure to quantify that parameter.

Nice shots! I haven't seen a Gang-gang in a while. At the moment, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoos and King Parrots are very noisy in Canberra. I hope to get a good photo of a Gang-gang one day!

Ah, we had tons of these fellas on ANU campus. Could be really annoying early in the morning when they made a lot of noise
