Down the Hatch (Almost) - And Water Drops
Posted By: Sailor, 07-05-2008, 01:50 PM

On Wednesday, the first of our extended July 4th retreat to the boat, we were 10 minutes from casting off when this ugly sucker popped up out of nowhere.

We quickly reconnected shore power, dived below, battened the hatches, turned on the AC and waited it out. While below, I grabbed these shots out the forward hatch. I'm fascinated with photographing beading water - guess I need to get out more.

Good choice to stay put. I would not be on the water when that sucker hit. I like #3.

I was out on liberty in Olongapo one day when a loudspeaker truck came down the street bellowing that everyone from the ships currently in port were under emergency recall orders and were to beat feet down to the docks just as fast they could.

It turns out that there was a typhoon inbound and that Uncle Sam thought that all his ships should go out and play in it. This struck me as pure madness, after all....we were safely moored to a pier. I asked one of the officers what the reasoning for this was and got the clearest and most concise explanation I have ever had of anything in my whole life.

He simply held out one fist at about waist level and said, "ship". He held out the other fist and said, "pier". He then violently smacked his fists together a few times and said, "See?"

The ride we got from that typhoon is something that leaves me at a loss for words to describe. Let's just say I'm glad I did it once but I would politely refuse the chance to do it again. I felt most sorry for a couple of new guys who had just come aboard and for whom it was their first day at sea. One of them we thought would die from seasickness and despondency while the other was having so much fun we worried he would be disappointed to learn that this was not the norm.

This thing was no typhoon, but it - and its brothers and sisters - kept us at the dock for the rest of the day. Luckily, the next day was beautiful with a perfect sailing breeze (9 - 12 kts).

Thanks for the kind comments on #3.
