Steam train
Posted By: Aldebaran, 02-21-2016, 11:26 AM

About 50 German train spotters rented this train for a nostalgic photo opportunity, and my town of Stara Tura (Slovakia) happened to be on its route. I do not waste such opportunity and decided to chase this train with my buddy Tomas, and his father :-)

For a period look you could try it in B&W. Nice shot.

Nicely done. I like both color and b/w, but lean toward b/w.

They're both crackers. Fabulous shot. Did you manage to get any others.

I've heard of renting a car, but a train? That just blows my mind.

Either version...colour or B+W...very nice. I would crop out much of the landscape to emphasize the steam locomotive.

Yeah, I am curious to know more. Do they give you a lesson on building steam and dumping coal, or does someone else operate it for you?

Hi r0ckstarr,

as far as I know, those people where following the train which stopped in certain areas, even between the stations so they can shoot it or film it. It was operated by proffesional drivers and other personnel, and took hefty amount of money to rent (cca 17 000 EUR). This is how it looked like when I arrived at the station. Dozens of cars with German and Austrian licence plates, and bunch of people with expensive DSLRs and 4K video cameras, encircled the train and snapping pictures like crazy :-) Then the train moved behind the switch and returned back to dump 4 cars because somebody made mistake in calculating the total weight and due to high incline of tracks, poor machine was struggling. Then the start up came and I took the picture attached bellow. Train left my hometown and we got into the car and drove to the next interesting spot.which was the previous photo. Those crazy Germans disappeared for few minutes, only to storm our place about 20 minutes after us. This happening was unnoficial, so the stations were not filled with local people, but we know a guy who works on the railway and takes care of railway museum in my hometown :-) BTW, steam in this engine is not produced by burning coal, it is produced by burning mazut, which has better attributes, like higher heating temperatures, no sparks that can and did set the fields and meadows on fire, and achieving more power in hilly regions.

The PP on the first color shot reminded me of the way BW photos were colored with inks, to me it looked more "vintage" than the BW shot did, either way I really like both of them.

Hi r0ckstarr,
Very interesting. Thanks for explaining. Also, did not know about mazut.
