Tourist-Eye View ....
Posted By: J.Scott, 07-06-2008, 05:07 PM

.... of the Sault Ste. Marie shipping locks. Well, the puny lock on the Canadian side that is.

We did a quick stop at the locks before we drove home today. I will apologize up front as most of the shots are quite 'touristy' in subject matter. It's a pretty spot, fairly avoided by most tourists as they tend to gravitate toward the American side where the gigantic lift locks are located. Those can handle huge ocean and lake freighters while this lock is for much smaller craft.

An old stone building overlooking the lock turned into the interpretative/visitor center.

Another view of the same building. Not sure which one I like best.

A view of the lock almost full and ready to open. I was chatting it up with the two tourists from Massachusetts to the right. They stepped back so as not to interfere with my picture. It's the fish-eye lens, they'd have to stand behind me to keep out of the picture.

The Soo Locks tour boat came out through the opened lock. (Looks like fun; I want to take the tour some day.)

I was using my newly purchased DA 18-55mm II lens for the boat shot; and it works rather well. This is a 100% crop of the tour boat pic above. Not bad for a "kit" lens, I'd say. ( I just noticed how the guy with the shirt wrapped around his head looks like "crazy" Ted Kazinsky. Yeesh!)

CC is always welcomed, but not always heeded.

Very nice shots, I like the second view of the lock building best.

Nice tour Jeff - don't mind the tourist trip at all. Love the Fisheye shot.

I prefer the first shot Jeff.
Thanks for posting, one of these days I'm gonna go to Welland, I think they're the closest to Windsor - on the Canuck side.
