Owl and Roadrunner
Posted By: Workingdog, 07-07-2008, 05:40 PM

These are my first real attempts at bird photography. They were not taken in the wild and are not even in the same league as some of the more accomplished bird photographers on this forum but a guy's got to start somewhere, right?

Yes, I've noticed softness sometimes when I post here. They are much sharper when viewed on my computer. Some possibilities: My Tamron 18-250 is just not as sharp as a prime especially wide open, something in the mechanics of posting here is causing loss of sharpness, maybe I'm not sharpening enough in post processing. Any other ideas?

Do you sharpen after you downsize for posting? If not, you might want to try a little USM with radius = 0.75 and threshold (strength) around 75

Tim,

I sharpen at full resolution and then resize for posting. In PP I usually USM with radius of 0.50 and strength of only 30. Strength of 75, huh? Can you explain why to resize first and then sharpen? Appreciate your help.

When you resize you're changing the resolution of the image. Sharpening afterwards will give ou back some of the detail you loose.

Really nice photos but as others have said allready a little on the soft side. Sharpening should be done as the very last step after all other processing is completed. As a rule I start with 0.6 radius and around 30% but it depends on the individual image, if need be go higher in the % but if you see halos you've gone too far

Thanks everyone for the tip to sharpen after resizing. It makes a huge difference. I always sharpen last in my postprocessing but for some reason I just didn't count the resizing for this forum to be a step.
