managed to catch one of the 747-400F freighters taking off, it must have been empty as it positively leapt off the runway (I was standing about half way and it was already a couple of hundred feet up and going like a homesick angel...

Thanks for posting. I bought the same lens about 2 months ago, but have not got out to shoot any pics of aircraft yet (too busy). Airport near me has 2 pretty good observation decks. Some of my best pics out there were right after it rained, but was shooting with a pretty slow lens. Bet the tamron would do really well in same situation.
