Field Owl
Posted By: paulsoucy, 07-08-2008, 11:29 AM

Shot with my newly purchased 18-250 from Pentax!

Any thoughts or critiques are welcome...

At the long end of this lens you do lose some sharpness and resolution so I did adjust the sharpness in RAW and added back in the blacks a little bit...

I'd like to know what you think, I would totally print this I think it would hold up at least up to 16 by 20...

Whats everyone think?

Paul

I think you are right, this picture does indeed deserve to be printed and hung on the wall, and I imagine that you are correct that it would still look good at that size.

I would probably crop it as a portrait, and then I would print it. Good work.

Mee too. I think cropping it too much will degrade the resolution and you could only get a smaller size. Print it as is. Looks great, excellent job.

Thank you everyone so much for the great reply to this photo!!

Definitely happy I brought my 18-250 lens... its for that this kind of shot I wanted that flexibility.

I happen to work for an organization that has a very large field on it's premises... there is even some marsh. It's really weird...

Well anyways these field owls are popping up in nests all over the field.. First there was about one or two now there are like 7 or 8 nests.

I had previously tried to get close enough with my 28-78 but the owls would agitate and fly off and get very territorial, they are quite pissy if you get too close to the nest.

So this time with my 18-250 in hand... i drove close to the nest in the safety of my car in case one came after me.. I would say about 15 feet off... this particular owl got a litlte agitated and as luck would have it hopped onto to one of the metal posts our facilities guys had staked into the ground around their nest when they were not there to mark off the wildlife..

Snap! Snap! Snap! Trying to adhere to the rule of thirds... this one stood out to me because his face is one direction, but his body and feet go the other way so it adds some dynamic tension...

I would really print this as it stands... but I wanted to ask... should I clone out the pole on the right? I find it a little distracting... like my right eye wanders to it some.. and perhaps maybe dodge up the owls eyes to bring them out a little brighter? I guess this is a preferernce but I'm asking what's everyone think?

Paul. If you can clone out the pole at least to the green vegetation without causing an issue, then go for it. It would improve the shot.

Here are a couple of more from this series.... which one should I print?

The original posted shot for comparison and evaulation ( its up on the top of this page )

I think because of the pole on the right hand side of the one above, I am leaning toward number 3... just wondering what other eyes see or would pick.... I've got some great responses from these pics. so I'm really happy it resonates so well with people!
