Moss and mushrooms
Posted By: bobbotron, 03-28-2016, 12:33 PM

I need to up my macro lighting game, there's so much great moss, lichen and mushrooms at my cabin. I think these all were using a 540 flash off camera, using a mini diffuser. I have a love/hate relationship with the diffuser, when it works it's great, I think it was confusing things with these photos.

Getting detail in moss seems to be my personal failure. I've taken literally hundreds of moss pictures and do not have a single one I am proud of. There just seems to be something about moss that prevents me from photographing it.

these look to be straight out of the camera. I think with these subjects you will need some PP to bring out what your eye saw.

It is harder than it looks! I plan to keep at it. I think a tripod + possibly off camera flashes is in order to get really crisp photos, and perhaps focus stacking software. The DOF of a macro lens is pretty limited at 1:1 and there is a lot of depth to these subjects.

I did play with the RAW files a bit, but it wasn't really happening, plus I wasn't a huge fan of the composition anyway so I called it good enough. I think the first one is interesting, at first everything looks a bit weird zoomed in - everything is covered in a thin film of water and ice. Tough life as a moss.
