Lavenham is a village standing on high ground by the Brett a tributary of the river Stour. It was formerly a place of some importance being one of the principal centres of the cloth trade during the 15th and 16th centuries and there are many old houses, once occupied by weavers, still standing.
The magnificent church was built by John de Vere,13th Earl of Oxford and the Spring family who flourished here as clothiers in the 15th and 16th centuries.
It is today one of the finest preserved examples of an English medieval village and well worth a visit.
