Trying out a Sigma 24-60 2.8 EX
Posted By: WJW, 07-13-2008, 12:23 PM

Went to Austin with my wife Thursday and took my new lens to try out. Here are a few shots that were OK (the not ok were my fault). All were handheld, Aperture Priority, and slight PP.

Capitol statue 1 1/1600, f4, 24mm, ISO 200

Capitol statue 2 1/400, f8, 24mm, ISO 200

Odd place for a wedding dress 1/50, f4, 24mm, ISO 800

Capitol dome 1/200, f4, 24mm, -1EV, ISO 200

Bead store 1/60, f3.2, 60mm, ISO 800

Nice stuff, I especially like the last 2. The dome shot is pretty spectacular, Nice crop to make it perfectly symmetrical (handheld?, if so well done, if not still well done....).

Seems like a sharp lens.

The dome shot was hand held. The DPS troopers tend to discourage setting up tripods in the busiest spot in the building, at least during the day when there are lots of visitors and tours.

I'm pleasantly pleased with the lens thus far. Since it works out to a 36~90 on my DS and I carried a K1000 with a 35~90 for years, it feels very comfortable and the nice, bright view with the 2.8 aperture doesn't hurt my feelings at all. I think it will turn out to be a well spent $225.

wow, I never realized how inexpensive that lens is, especially for a f2.8. I assume its probably because some consider 24-60 to be a limited/unconventional scope on a cropped sensor, i.e. not very wide and not very long. You seem to be getting along just fine within it's confines

Just curious if you happened to consider it's (much) bigger brother the 24-70/2.8 I've heard good things about that as well, but it's quite a porker.

I did, but the limited macro and extra 10mm just didn't seem worth an extra $200 for me. Plus it is 40% longer and 25% heavier for the small gains. I also have a DA 50-200 and I don't like to overlap my lenses by too much.
