Great shot! Must have had a shallow depth of field at F2.8. How did you focus?

Thank You OldGeaser. ( it seems rude to me to call you that !! ) I was using AF, but the bees were flying into a pretty strong head wind, so they were almost hovering. This photograph was the best of about 4 that I took, and it is also about a 30% crop to frame the image to my liking.

What a wonderful photograph. Very colorful and interesting. I wonder what he is thinking. "Are the air traffic controllers still on strike, or do I have to wait for a number to land.?" ))

Many thanks.

Congratulations! BiF pictures are a favorite of mine, but my keeper rate is likely an order of magnitude below yours. I don't even try at f/2.8 as DoF is so extremely thin. Not only did you capture nice detail, also the angle of light is good to avoid tricky reflections which can ruin a shot like this in direct sunlight.

Watch some bees around you, you may be amazed that this is rather modest load - so far. She may be collecting more. Compare it to e.g. this shot of homecoming bees which I posted earlier. They can carry a lot - entire bees when cleaning up the hive. You often see them with a lot of pollen in early spring, when the colony needs to grow quickly for the soon following peak of the nectar harvest.

Thank you JensE. I tried at 2.8 because the background was very busy and the bee would have disappeared. The 100mm 2.8 macro WR is a blessing.

Thanks to both you gentlemen for the very positive posts. I have seen both of your images here and appreciate your words. But also I think Lady Luck and the Pentax gods had quite a hand in this photograph !!

A photographer friend once told me his luck was made up of equal parts persistence, patience and pig-headedness. He also said a good photographer always blames his equipment. hee - hee!!!!!!!!

I think with me it is 10% persistence, 15% patience and the rest is the pig-headedness bit !!! Thanks mate.
