Rays in the sky are shadows from mountains.

Now that is very cool image and an interesting bit of insight about the shadows.

Very cool. I know Chaco, but cannot figure out where this photo was taken from. Do you care to share the approximate location?

A vary interesting view of New Mexico's high desert at a time of day you don't usually see. I like it very much.

I was on a short hiking trail along the north ridge above and between Gallo campground and the staff housing. The trail starts near the first campsite (used by the campground host), quickly ascends the ridge, then travels west.

The trail is official and shown on https://www.nps.gov/chcu/planyourvisit/maps.htm. Chaco doesn't open until 7 AM but this trail is before the gated barrier so I could start the hike at first light to be in place by sunrise.

Very cool effect created by mountain shadows. Pleasing colors as well.

Thanks! That that helps. I have been on that trail, though not at that time of day.

I love that shot. The negative rays are excellently shown in this image.

I had never considered that the negative rays were shadows from the mountains. It's obvious now that it's been mentioned . Thanks.

Nice balance in the foreground, with its subdued colors letting the shadow rays take command of the image. The effort to seek unusual lighting is so worth it. Excellent image. Thanks.
