It was raised in the memory of Norwegian sailors who offered their lives during WWII. NORTRASHIP was the world's greatest shipping company with more than 1000 vessels bringing fuel and other goods to Britain. 473 ships were lost and 3700 sailors lost their lives, the u-boats were hunting the ships all the time.

Generally the war sailors were not treated well by the Norwegian Government after the war.
