The canal originally would have carried coal, iron ore, limestone and many other materials within the area. This canal is not far from
what is seen as the birthplace of the industrial revolution in England (at Ironbridge, where cast iron was first produced)
Also the canal pre-dates the coming of railways as a form of goods transport, so would also have carried perishable goods such as food, etc.
The Aquaduct you can see in the photo is now a UNESCO world heritage site due to it's importance as part of our industrial history.
