Had a wonderful weeks holiday on the Llangollen canal in Wales, cruising along in a narrow boat, great weather and loads of photo opportunities along the route.

Hi IgorZ

The canal originally would have carried coal, iron ore, limestone and many other materials within the area. This canal is not far from
what is seen as the birthplace of the industrial revolution in England (at Ironbridge, where cast iron was first produced)

Also the canal pre-dates the coming of railways as a form of goods transport, so would also have carried perishable goods such as food, etc.

The Aquaduct you can see in the photo is now a UNESCO world heritage site due to it's importance as part of our industrial history.

I would never have thought that crusing along at 4mph and stopping at canalside pubs to have some nice beers could be so tiring....

When I was a boy, my mum wouldn't buy "soft" Cape Breton coal for our home furnace. "Not good enough, not enough heat in the coal and would leave clunkers." She had to have imported good Welsh anthracite, "hard" coal which would burn clean. I had to shovel it. I grew up believing Wales was one big coal mine. These pictures of the canal Wales are great. It looks like the canal goes over a bridge and through a tunnel. I bet the Welsh coal I shoveled came from the mine to Liverpool for export to Nova Scotia.
