Abandoned Niagara Falls Ontario

IN a fairly small are of Niagara Falls near the bus terminal are a host of abandoned buildings, obviously remnants of the days of rail. The VIA rail terminal is shut down the tracks look unused. The old Police Station has been abandoned since 72. It was used as the morgue in the Marilyn Munro movie "Niagara".

Abandoned factory.

The old police station

An empty Hotel

An empty, restored (clearly at great expense) but not yet occupied bank.

The barbershop.

The soda fountain.

The abandoned train station.

The slideshow.

Nice series, Norm and Tess. A lot of so called "ruin porn" shows such places in a dreary light, but your shots in relatively full light create a feeling of recent abandonment, even if it's been over 40 years, in some cases.

Great shots. The buildings are beautiful & look in relatively good shape. I especially like the Soda Fountain. Around here a contractor would've bought all these buildings & turned them into pricey real estate. We visited the US side of the falls a few years ago & just a few blocks away there were abandoned buildings & lots of poverty. The buildings were pretty run down & boarded up. Going to go look at that soda fountain shot again...

The soda fountain and barber shop were taken through the windows. That's Tess at work.

We went back today and all the windows were boarded up, the barber shop and soda fountain are no longer "open".

Do you happen to know when VIA ended service there?

Christmas 1970, when I was a grad student in upstate NY, I took a round-about trip home {sort of like "around the world in 80 days", but much faster}, including
taxi ride from Niagara Falls NY bus station to Niagara Falls ON train station
train ride from Niagara Falls ON train station to Toronto ON train station

It is very sad to see the place shut down now ... but thank you for showing it to us.

From the information on line it's unclear just how operational it is. That might be a subject of further investigation.
Niagara Falls train station | VIA Rail

I'm surprised there are even trains there. The tracks looked unused. But there were still tracks so anything is possible. Signage indicated washroom etc. were now at the Bus Terminal across the street, so I'm not sure the information on website is accurate.

For better or worse, urban decay makes for a great subject for photography. Love these shots. Thank you for sharing.

Nice set.

#3, the police station, looks unusual compared to the others. Was that an in-camera HDR?

We see so little of it here, it's kind of a novelty.

Sometimes the dynamic range of the scene matches the dynamic range of the camera such that HDR is unnecessary.

The reflections off of the windows on those two shots look really interesting.
