My First Snake!
Posted By: Carlosc647, 07-17-2008, 09:18 PM

I had to shrink this photo a lot and I don't think I did the RAW to JPEG right... so its lost a lot of detail. BUT it was my first wild animal in the woods and I'm excited about it!

Not that close! I don't know anything about snakes and this bad boy was moving fast! I used my Pentax SMC 50-200. If I recall, I was about 15 ft or more away and I think I had the lens set to 100mm. I need to look that up though.

UPDATE!

Black Rat Snake

That's a really nice shot of my all-time favorite snake, Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta, the Black Rat Snake. I rarely see them in the wild around here anymore as so much of their natural habitat has been commercialized.

Nice shot!

One photo you will not see from me. Once I see a snake... I mark that spot as "Never to return" Just got a thing about snakes! JIMBO

PS: Nice shot though!

Thanks for the feedback!

I really appreciate the feedback. Wild life is definitely a fun and rewarding subject matter. My problem with wild animal shots is that I live in NYC and rarely have an opportunity to hit the great outdoors for these kind of shots. Hopefully, I'll have more opportunities as time goes by.

Carlos, the Catskills are not that far away; I have made a day trip of the Catskills and I am in RI. Those Black Rat snakes can be found in abundance in Virginia as I learned while hiking the AT down there 2 years back. They have amazing ability to climb trees--it is fascinating to watch them go up a tree. They are no threat since they are non-venomous. Here is a shot of another non-venomous snake--the Eastern Garter. This is a very tiny crop, no size reduction, from a %100 shot.

K20 w Tammy 17-50mm @ 4.5--ISO 100--1/180th--50mm

Regards,

Ernest
