Elephants in Cambodia!
Camera: K3 Photo Location: Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia
Posted By: NewportPreacher, 06-23-2016, 07:56 PM

We took a mini-vacation to Mondulkiri province (Cambodia) earlier this week. The highlight was a day spent at a wildlife sanctuary, chasing and looking at these two amazing beasts. Sixty-five year old sisters, or so we're told. Hope you enjoy the images.

I love the second shot in B&W. Are those young men in the first tourists or sanctuary personnel? Either way, I am amazed they are allowed to get so close.

Those two man are the mahouts, or elephant caretakers. They are ethnically Bunong (a tribal people who live in that part of Cambodia) men who work for the sanctuary. They're with the elephants every day. I believe they're pretty gentle with them, but I also think that the elephants are not truly "wild" — it appears that they've been semi-domesticated in the past, but are now living a semi-wild existence there on the sanctuary.
