During Enver Hoxha's period as communist leader there were buildt 750 000 bunkers like this in Albania, to avert possible external invasion.

Paranoia seems to be a worldwide theme for leaders, most of whom would be very pleased to see that their paranoia can be viewed with an historical context.
It is good to view a photograph with a story. You can almost feel the boredom oozing through the slit

I think Enver Hoxha suffered of serious degree of paranoia. Anyone he felt was a treat to his power was either executed or put to prison.

Now imagine what he could have done if he'd built 50,000 small breweries or 10,000 small cheese factories, or 10,000 bacon processing plants. He could have had beer cheese and bacon for everyone. Instead, you have 750,000 cottages to small to read a book comfortably in.

Sitting in something like that, I'd feel like a sitting duck. You can only see one way. And the hole you shoot out.. people can shoot in. In fact you're at a severe disadvantage, the enemy knows exactly where you are, but can you see where they are? The philosophy behind such structures is difficult to comprehend.

It must have been something to give the army something to do to justify it's existence. After all, soldiers sitting around with nothing to do can't be a good situation.
