SUrf event-Italy
Posted By: jonny1986, 07-18-2008, 02:21 PM

The title is a bit provocatve. i kept on with my batte against the bashing of pentax af system. I'm the first to say that for pro spor photographer pentax is not the best bt nt the wrst too. I work a s phtographer and i have to say i shoot sport for the moment only for fun.
Today i shoot this beautiful event in italy, yes we don't play only soccer but also surf and surf is really up in this moment in italy, for the italian championship. i rest there only half day, the event last till late in the night with nocturnal race and party.
It's my first experience with surf photos.
All the photos are with the da 50-135.
my consideration:

1- remember to switch the is off or you'll ed up with blurred images at 1/2000 sec, luckily only some frame AT the beginning was really a pain. I was beginning to think my lens was a lemon))

2- the lens is a joy to use. af is silent and fast. sharp at every aperture but 135 2,8, a bit soft. any pfrringing experience at th moment. superb building.

3- the lens is a bit shor for ths kind situation. for me t's the best tool for fashion and portrait, theatre indoor events.

4-i need longer tele, ill buy the two tele and the 60-250 4 and maybe if pentax sponsor me they will lease me the 600!!!

5-af today was perfec. most of the 500 frame were in fcus, some tack sharp, the one were the subject was more near me. completely out of focus were 3-5%. Sometimes i have the feeling the camera locked perfectly, in fact i have series of 12 shts perfectly sharp. I tried the anikon d300 and the real difference is that nikon track very weel without using the center focus,so u need nly to point and shot, with pentax u need srely much work and more tracking.

6-FPS. 3 are good,.5 or 6 would be perfect.

7- pentax is not so far behind for me. it has to work in low light and tracking andadd some fps, but also with the "poor" af of k10d i can live well for myneeds.

C&C welcomed.

No wonder Azzurri is tied to Italy - those are beautiful waters. Were you on land when you shot these - presumably yes.

Images seem quite sharp and there appears to be no haze - lucky you. Did you use a polorising filter?

And they say Pentax is no good for sports, rubbish. With the right lense Pentax can match ALL of them.

Thanks for posting these Jonny.

@ben
What about the surfer dudes!???

Great surfing shots. I never would think of Italy as a surfing spot but where there is water there must be waves.
