In general I would step back from the subject and get the focus as sharp as I can then crop the shot later as that tends to give me the DOF I'm after. If I'm too close to the subject the DOF is very shallow.

That's what I've found and I'm doing the same while stopping down a couple more at the time too.

Aye but plan goes pear shaped... after you run out of F stops at F22 or F32.
