The right place at the right time...

The A42 northern resident pod of Orca came in close to Shiels Bay, Malcolm Island, this morning. This lucky tourist was walking with her dog along the shoreline about 700 metres west of the Bere Point campground when the large male Orca known as A66 surfaced right in front of her!

Yes, about 800 metres further to the west of this spot, there is a beach at Bere Point, where the Northern Resident Orca are frequently seen rubbing their bellies on the smooth rocks that line the beach. I've personally seen them do this and they were only a few metres off shore at the time. pretty amazing sight!

The focus and depth of field are both truly spot-on with this. The tourist and orca pop out from the landscape so nicely.

I watched a documentary where those things were swimming right up onto the beach to grab seals and sea birds. Good thing the lady and her dog were at a safe distance!

These are so called Northern resident Orca, found along the coast of British Columbia. Some of the pods of Orca engage in beach rubbing, including at a beach only 500 metres away from where this photo was taken. But these particular Orca only eat salmon, and are not a threat to mammals in any way. That includes humans and dogs!
