Are you sure it's not a mid 20th century bomb shelter?

Nice picture.

Reminds me of when I was a kid. I spent summers in Northern Minnesota. In the small village there was an ice house built around the late 1880's. It was largely an earthen structure with wood framing inside and a wooden door for entry/exit. The ice house was mostly built under ground, with just a slight rise at the surface of the earth and a slanted door and then steps downward into the abyss of the ice house .

In the 1950's/60's they (local general store) were still using it to store huge chunks of ice that they had sawn from the nearby lake. People would buy chunks of ice to use for their camper coolers.

Very cool...ice was actually a valuable international commodity before electricity--for instance, ice from Walden Pond in New England (made famous of course by that original Berniebro, Henry David Thoreau) was shipped everywhere from the Caribbean to India.

Interesting history and a good find. Could you get inside as it would be interesting to see and I'm sure that would lead to some interesting light?

No, there's a wee dark plaque in the middle there identifying it.

It's right on the shore of what used to be a fishing area for that part of the the coastline.

Aye, it had great preserving powers for delicate produce.

If I could find a door... but I left the machete at home that day, I would agree.

I'm thinking there must be an entrance at the other end of the building to this.
