Loving the Pentax 100mm 2.8 macro lens
Posted By: rjhoff, 08-02-2016, 06:40 PM

I have been very impressed with this lens using it hand held for most of the shots below. Shifting to manual focus on the fly has helped secure more good shots.

Later this year I'll be upgrading to the K3ii. After a lot of thought I believe that this is the lens that's coming with it. The images you've posted here helps to ease my mind in that decision. Thank you.

Great shots, it is a nice lens! Manual is the way to go for macro a lot of the time.

Nice photos. I bought one this year and love mine. Its probably on my K3 more often than all my other lens. Great choice!

Yes, the 100mm lenses are great.
This year I'm using a Sunpak DX-8R in conjunction with the 100mm and it's been a huge boost.

Nice shots...but I highly recommend a flash of some sort. I will help out a lot.
There are some pretty cheap solutions out there.

It's a great lens - probably the sharpest available in the Pentax lineup. Super for macro shots when you can't get really close. Here's one I took not long ago when the prickly pear cacti in our front yard were blooming. Just another day at the office for this bee!

Very nice shots!

I had been using a Sigma 105mm Macro but recently replaced it with the Pentax 100mm 2.8 WR. Love it. I must agree with TER-OR that a ring flash helps tremendously with macros (even if it flattens the images a bit) because you can get the ring flashes into places where other flashes just won't work.

Here's a recent one that I never would have shot without the Pentax AF080C.

I've been surprised that this lens doesn't have its own thread. So many people think so highly of it. I struggle with it sometimes, but when I get it right, it's worth it. I've started exploring ways I can use it beyond macro.

Glad these shots helped you with your decision. My favorite lens is still my 77 limited which I use for indoor sports, portraits and many everyday shots but this 100 macro is often on my K3.

So far I have been pleased with the results without a flash like the samples I posted, but at some point I plan to invest in a ring flash for lower light situations.

I've been thoroughly enjoying this thread! I just ordered the Sunpak flash for my 100mm macro. I also have the Pentax 50mm and would like to get a step down ring so I can use the flash on this lens also. Never used a ring light before, any problems using on a 50mm? Which brands of rings would be the best?

.
Me too. Not just for lower light but also for when I've stopped way down for depth of field but handheld.

I took this this morning with this lens. The water drops on a rose picture itself isn't that great but the extreme crop of the drops is interesting. Impressive that this lens can capture small details so well.
