Been quiet, back with some drift action!
Posted By: blwnhr, 07-22-2008, 02:13 AM

I've been away from the forums lately, so busy with my other business!

Went out and shot some drift last weekend, had a big session on slow shutter speeds. Please comment on, and critique my results.

Wow........awesome shots.

Too bad though I read somewhere that Pentax cameras were not very good for fast action sports shooting...............

Think about how good your shots would be with a 'good' camera.............LOL

Really cool pics!!

Thankyou very much. The gear was right at it's limit for most of that stuff and I tossed a lot of shots because the AF decided to go on a break or couldn't keep up.

Yeah, I found the same yesterday with the rally. It can do the simpler stuff fairly well but is very easily confused. Brilliant photos

I'm interested in your panning technique. I tried some of this at the dragstrip yesterday but with practically no keepers. Do you pan from left to right with the car or right to left into the car? Do you pan at a slow, regular, or fast pace? And do you find with the higher F stop like 8 - 11 - 13, you're able to get more keepers?

Thanks for sharing!

Hey Rob, I'll answer each question in turn.

You must go with the car, on these first shots from left to right.

You have to match the car speed exactly. And more than that, the slower the shutter speed the more you need to select a specific point on which to follow. In the first shot I was following the front corner of the car, whereas on the second the focus point is about the centre of the front wheel (the guard is sharp). This is simply because I wasn't following quite quickly enough. Bear in mind these cars were doing 60-80MPH at this point.

I shoot shutter priority, so the high f-stop is simply a bi-product of the slow shutter. I don't notice any difference shooting with a smaller aperture.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Kris, I'll check out your shots! Don't know if any are going to be printed, will have to see.
