Snail on a tarp(aulin)
Lens: Pentax FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: Perth, Western Australia ISO: 280 Shutter Speed: 1/180s Aperture: F5.6
Posted By: Dean Bradshaw, 09-08-2016, 05:12 AM

I had a spare moment last weekend, so threw the macro lens on the camera and took a couple of shots in the backyard. This is the one I was happiest with...nothing too exciting, just a common garden snail on a common blue tarp.

It did make me wonder if other countries use the shortened form of Tarpaulin...tarp...or is this another example of Aussies being too lazy to use full words?

Cheers
Dean

Funny, I thought Tarp was an American term (we use it all the time). In fact if you said Tarpaulin to someone, they might think it was a fish!

Nice shot. A little more DoF would have helped I think. Great color for the BG!

Yep, we say Tarp here too. And as BigDave mentioned, more DOF would made the photo more in focus. More often than not, an f stop over f8 would have made the body more in focus and given more details. But nice capture. TFS

Love the combo of the snail shells texture and the texture of the tarp.

Thanks BigDave. Well, good to know it's not just us Aussies to lazy to use the big words

Agreed on the DoF...not sure why I didn't go with a higher f-stop...just blazing away a bit

Thanks photolady, I did actually take a few more with a higher f-stop, but didn't end up liking the composition as much...I'll have to pay a bit more attention next time I mount the macro.

Thanks very much Brian

Yeah, for me there was something about the vertical blue/green divide and the shell texture...I really need to use the FA 50mm Macro more...it's a bloody good lens.

Appreciate the comment...I can see why people get right into macro (no delusions about my meagre abilities here)...it really is awesome focussing on the little things every now and then

Thanks for the comment Tony.

Yeah, I could probably have gotten away with a higher f-stop/slower shutter speed combo here, you think? To be honest, for a snail, he was surprisingly quick!

I really like this photo - the blue makes it pop. And the play between the blue and green background adds to the photo without taking away from the snail.
