Pentax close-up lenses
Posted By: jcdoss, 09-29-2016, 05:59 PM

Does anyone know with certainty which Pentax branded close-up lenses are achromatic doublets? I know there are lists scattered hither and yon, but I'd like to be clear before I start wasting money. What about Close Up Lens #1? T80? These are available at KEH now, but I find no trustworthy info on either. I'm interested in a set of lenses at variable diopters less than +2 to carry along for impromptu close-ups when my macros aren't handy.

From a previous post. I have also used Canon FD close up lenses which are available in 52mm size & are doublets.

With the release of the K Series in 1975 Pentax introduced a new set of close-up lenses.

Six were available in two filter thread sizes and all had SMC coatings:

S25 (52mm: K50/1.4 & K55/1.8)
S40 (52mm: K50/1.4 & K55/1.8)
T80 (52mm: K85/1.8, K105/2.8, K120/2.8, K135/3.5 & K150/4)
T95 (58mm: K135/2.5 & K200/4)
T160 (52mm: K105/2.8, K120/2.8, K135/3.5 & K150/4)
T183 (58mm: K135/2.5 & K200/4)

“S” indicates the close-up lens is for “standard” lenses and “T” is for “telephoto” lenses. The “number” indicates the focal length of the close-up lens in cm. (The distance from film to subject, the shorter the focal length the bigger the magnification.) Usable/recommended K Series lenses are in brackets.

These are great close-up accessories that look & work exactly like a Pentax SMC fitter. They take up little space in your camera bag and are perfect for close-ups if you don’t own a macro lens or extension tubes. Unlike a macro lens or extension tubes there is no exposure factor or light loss.

The highest magnification you can get with a K Series close-up lens is 0.42x with a S25 and a K55/1.8 lens. That’s close to a K50/4 or K100/4 Macro lens, which both have 0.5x magnification.

I have the diopter that came with my smc 85-210 f/3.5 and it seems to be a single element. I (thus) wonder if the 35mm system diopters (not those for medium format) aren't all single elements.

I use two 645 diopters (S33 and S56, both 58 mm filters) and they are fantastic for many lenses including some vintage zooms (Tamron Adaptall 01A and other primes and zooms in 70 - 150 range. The only downside - they are liitle heavy so I do not use them with "plastic-fantastic" lenses.

Thanks everyone! After doing the math, it's looking like telephotos would get the most help from diopters of <1, and perhaps <0.5, however I can't find much information on such beasts. I have the Raynoxes, which are fantastic but far too strong for 200mm and up. Apparently, there's a set of achromatic SLR Magic diopters in 77mm threads (which is what I need) which includes two lenses, +0.33 and +1.33 which should work fine for the lenses I'd need them for. They were made for anamorphic cine lenses, so they might not be appropriate for general photography? And there's very little info on performance and quality on any format. Anyone here used them, or even heard of them?

Never heard from them. But, if you google inside the brackets ( "SLR Magic" achromat ) the reviews do seem overwhelmingly positive. I wouldn't have thought anamorphic makes much difference, if anything the fact they can correct through these would presumably make them even better than most?

Unless those lenses have to have a specific orientation when attached I doubt it matters.
