Big cats at the zoo
Lens: DA55-300 Camera: K-1
Posted By: hecubus, 10-02-2016, 09:45 PM

Seems like my old 55-300 can still work with the K-1 as long as there is plenty of light.
Shot in fullframe mode with a pretty good crop in post.

real nice photos

some type of tiger

snow leopard

some other type of leopard or is it a jaguar

if I am not mistaken

I have been utilizing our zoo as well: Topeka Zoological Park Topeka KS

we have cougars, lions and Sumatran tigers 3 female cubs and mother, if the male is still here, I've never see it on display

first photo: Nikon Coolpix P610 (first time I used the camera) shot through glass window

next photos: K 3 + smc PENTAX-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL, lion shot through bars and tiger cub shot through glass window

Thank you! Nice pics too! This was at the Granby Zoo,Quebec.
Indeed you are right. The tiger is a Siberian/Amur tiger. Last one is a South American jaguar.
Shooting through glass windows is a bit tricky for reflections.
I wish I had a polarizer on the 55-300 to reduce them.

Me too, that's why I have two small tigers(tabby cats) at home

yes reflections caused by the glass enclosures can cause trouble, I mainly deal with it by finding an angle that removes the reflections or lessen them

however some times I like them, they can help with the story

for example, the local school system had "teacher work day" scheduled on the day I took the photos:
