Pentax 31mm Limited reversed
Posted By: pizzamaker74, 10-09-2016, 06:59 AM

Has anyone ever reversed this lens for Macro ? With the built in hood it might be difficult - is it any good for macro? I have the other limiteds as well. Are there any in particular which are known to be good ?

I haven't tried it, but it's next on my list after adapting my K-1000 to take medium format film.

I am not brave enough to reverse FA 31 for macro. I don't want to risk the scratch or fingerprint or dust on the rear element. The rear end is must less protected or sealed than front end of a lens. And now the focusing gear has to move the entire lens when reversal mounted.

The built in lens hood on the Pentax FA31mm Limited makes the lens reversal technique cumbersome and more than a little impractical. Your working distance will be far too short that it probably will bring the subject very close to the rear element of the lens: increasing the risk of contact, and potentially cause damage to the element. However having said that the FA31 does superbly with extension tubes. Be warned, even with an 11mm extension tube your working distance will be very short indeed. Don't even think about attempting this on the K-1 without crop mode turned on.

Pentax K5IIs - SMCP-FA 31mm f/1.8 ASPH Limited 1/500th f/4 ISO 80 + 11mm extension tube.

Extreme macro

I should have said before I'm particularly interested in Extreme Macro. I also have the 100mm macro. Will extension tubes help here much?

Some like bellows photography for extreme close up. There is a new Pentax Bellows ebook by Murray O'neill here on the forum you might want to check out.

The Pentax 28mm 2.8/3.5 lenses are your best bet for reversing while using a bellows.

+1 for the Pentax Bellows guide that Murray published, he did an amazing amount of work on it!

Phil.
