That are two very nice photos Tom, longer lens would be OK but the long exposure gave you a nice effect here.

Take care,

I would have never thought to use a 1 sec shutter speed, fearing the Heron would move. But I should know better, I've observed these GBH enough to know they can be very still for a long time as long as they are not actively fishing. I really like the flow of the water that you achieved by using that long shutter speed here. Nice work Tom.

Thankyou all The long exposure initially wasnt intended and the 1st shots i took all had the heron moving. After sitting very still for a while (me) I noticed that he was also standing statue like and so I gave it a go.

I like how they came out but still I would have preferred to get closer. Its going to be a little while yet before i can afford a nice long bit of glass though

Another way is to get closer provided the bird is friendly. When it knows that there is fishes to catch, it will be back.

Mine was only 200mm

Nice shots Thomas - the long shutter speed really works on these.

Heinrich, good point about the long exposure. I would not have notice if you did not mentioned. I should remember that.

Thanks Tom, Daniel, Dave and song_hm

Daniel, those are superb shots. I dont think I could get that close, our resident heron is very shy. I was thinking of draping some material over the railing of our porch so that he doesnt spot me moving around. Again, lovely shots you took.

You're fortunate to have such a cooperative Heron. Very nice shots.

Very nice captures. They are great for standing like statues for long periods and he was clearly perfectly still for that second shot. The water effect makes it even better.

Thanks Reeftool and Peter If he keeps coming back then we will have to name him, we already have a resident Dipper called Derek who seems to have nested in one of our eaves. We also had a resident Robin called Colin for a while and some Blackbirds that we couldnt be bothered to name!

Thanks again.

These are wonderful shots Tom. I really like how these show the heron in its natural setting, the long exposure showing the flow of the water adds to it immensely.

Personally I think these have more interest than an extreme close up would. Perhaps an odd thing for me to say when I spend so much time trying to sneak up on birds with a Bigma....
