Randy, Played with some paper on the screen to see if it would crop.
The photo almost has too much going on and there is no focal point.
You might want to consider a square crop...take out the girl on the left (nose picking) and just behind the pony tail of the 5th girl from the left (eliminating nail biter) putting 4 girls into the shot and maybe crop off the top a bit to minimize some of the background distractions. Use 'image/adjustments/replace color' to change that intense green shirt in the background to something more subdued and not so eye drawing.
My 2 cents.

Hi clearence and thanks for your input. No doubt the background should be blurrier to min the distractions.
As far as the green shirt goes, there must be a difference in our monitors as the green is not that intense at all on my monitor. a different crop may work well too.

below is why I think it works, please let me know if it makes sense to you (also, all the girls face direction follow a pattern... almost symmetrical...then the girl looking back breaks this.... putting some "tension" into the symmetrics.

oh boy, I hope I make sense.

I was thinking of something like this. But this would take a lot out of the original photo. Two actions in Picasa, crop and selective focus.

not a bad idea, either!. the 10mp is a big bonus when doing such cropping.

cheers and thanks again.

Good job on the white balance. Gymnasium's lighting does crazy things haha. I agree with blurring the background just a tad bit and a little bit of cropping.

Randy,
The girl looking back is half a face so I never considered this as part of the dynamics. I am still not sure if I follow the two direction curves but then different minds see different things in photos. We have all noticed this based upon comments on various photos.

I like the crop and treatment Alvin did. Really put the focus on a definite subject and action.

Hi Randy, I agree with Clarence that a crop is in order but not the one he suggested. I'd take out most of the crowd above the girls completely, I agree with Clarence that the nose picker has got to go, but I'd leave the nail biter in. It gives the impression of intense action going on off screen. But I also get rid of the partial cheerleader at the far right. That might leave a long narrow pano-like photo, but I think it might be effective. If you want more of a 2X3 feel, include the rest of the crowd but blur them bigtime. Like you I don't find the green shirt to be distractive.

Did you see that? Salty put in 3 cent more than me. I'll be danged!

Well I like your idea probably better than I like my own crop idea.

If we are going to do some major fooling around I would clone out the nose picker, if possible, to keep as much of the young lady's leg and hand next to her in the photo, but that would be a bit of work to get to come off correct.

2 more cents worth and a penny for your thoughts.

I'd just crop out the little girl on the right and lower the top to get rid of the crowd a bit. Both the nose picker and nail biter work for me.

As the nose picker really isn't picking her nose she is allright. Isn't it a nervous gesture? Maybe one can make the nail on that finger get a little small bit more visible and it will work fine also for the well raised. She and the nailbiter adds to the feeling. Crop somehow and print it bigger.

1 cent only I'm afraid
